Corporate America

This week in class, we began the series, Mr. Robot. The main character Elliot, who is played by Rami Malek, is a great actor. He plays the character of a young anti-social cyber security worker for a tech firm. While he is great at cyber security, he is just as good at hacking. He is frustrated with “E Corp” which he calls “Evil Corp”. Since he is anti-social, he is quick to judge someone’s character. He has a very strong view about corporate America, as well as society in general. He was not a fan of their leaders, thinking that they were arrogant morons. Later in the first episode, he is introduced to an underground hacking firm, lying with a carnival. With great hacking skills, the goal of the hacking firm is to take down corporate America and the sleezy leaders within it. His view about society is that these big-time corporations have too much influence and control in this world. Of which, I can agree with. We are a power-hungry society. When you are at the top, you want to stay there. In doing so, you are willing to do whatever it takes to stay on the mountain top. All because of one thing; greed. Society is taken for granted by many people, of which, are powerful business leaders. Especially with technology being so important to us, businesses make sure to take advantage in getting their name out there.

Another important topic we talked about in class was net neutrality. At first, I didn’t really have a clue as to what it was. Net neutrality is a concept of internet service providers and organizations treating all data on the internet equally. When this is abided by, information can be exchanged freely and keeps internet data transmission to standards. While I am still a little unsure, the simplest form I can put it is that it is the freedom we have within the internet. What I didn’t realize was the costs that can come from net neutrality laws instilled. If there are regulations, we as consumers may face higher costs in trying to access specific services.

While big time companies and corporations cash in on paying expensive rates for using fast lane services, small companies must resort to using less expensive services that are not as fast and can slow down websites. It ruins competition because small companies and large companies are in leagues of their own, one with more resources and one with less. It is a slow process for large corporations to take advantage of and dominate. It might be good for the top leaders but it puts a lot of other people and businesses in a bad situation. It is supposed to be neutral. That is the concept.

I think that can really damage society but at faster and faster rates. Technology and media haven’t been around for as long as we think but as years go on, development and innovation becomes increasingly more present. It is only a matter of time before we live in a corporate society where businesses run our lives.

Johnny Depp is in a defamation case with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Many are showing support for Johnny Depp, and thinking that this is all about cancel culture and trying to ruin a big time name.
